First Hornworm of the Season

IMG_20150620_1666.jpg I saw no damage yesterday but found this today. I hate hornworms but my chickens love them. |

I hate those things. I know they're totally harmless to humans but I still think they're disgusting.

I think they are awesome because of their ability to remain invisible until you finally see them and you say to yourself "How the heck did I not see that big ole thing; its plain as day". I do hate what they do to a plant and the fruit though. I have only had two so far and didn't see either til they were dead. I saw the droppings but couldn't find them so I dusted the plant lightly with Sevin and in a few minutes they were on the ground dying.

Me and my son looked for this one for 10 minutes before he spotted him. They are the perfect color to blend in. Time to get the Sevin out. Thanks for the tip Bill! |

Paul, I saw my first horn worm last year. They eat a lot - in a hurry.
I have read that some gardeners do raise chickens in their fenced in gardens. It is a thought. |

I have had one so far this year. It did get squished, although I debated whether to through it up in an area where the birds might get to it.
These pics are from last year. It was the end of the season and a friend dropped some sick tomato plants off to see if I could do anything with them. They were in bad shape and determinate hybrids and I could see they weren't worth saving, but as I was watering I thought I had scale at first on the plant. I didn't have my glasses on. When I went to squish I saw the eggs. Yes, they can eat alot, but I let that one stay on since a wasp had parasitized it. Gross looking watching that worm munch away everyday til they eggs hatched. Gotta feed the beneficals too even if they do make you go ewwwwwwwwwww. |

Thanks for the idea Salt. We have several dogs so I keep the chickens in a pen. Don't want to give the dogs too much temptation |

Just smashed an egg cluster yesterday. Have only seen one tiny hornworm and some Army worms so far. Seem to making headway on the stink bugs, too.

I found 7 of these big ol' boogers today. It's like they popped up out of nowhere. They all got tossed in the road for the birds lunch.
