Debby's 2014 garden
Hi all,
For 2014 we've got about 120 tomato plants on the property. I'm trying a lot of different varieties. My Stupice will be my first of the year. I love that tomato. We've had two downpours lately and the garden has a lot of sand come to the top. |

Beautiful- what a lovely spot and great garden! Is that a purple martin house on your property? Do you even have stones to deal with?

Hi Kath,
That is a purple martin house. It's next to the garden. I love to hear them talk when we're working. Our garden is usually much darker and does have a few rocks in it, nothing large. The downpours have given the garden a totally different look |

We're surrounded by woods so we've always got a lot of birds 'talking', too, but I never tried a purple martin house because I thought we were too far from the canal & river for them to want to nest here. Do you have a pond?
That's really interesting how your soil can separate like that- we've got a clay loam that's loaded with red shale. When it rains here, it seems that the rocks come to the surface. kath |

Very nice! I always find it interesting how different soils are from one place to another. The soil in my garden is black. Have a great season!

We're about 6 miles from the river but have 3 dairy farms around us with ponds. That may help with the purple martins. From what we have tried, the martin house has to be away from the trees. Our garden is at the top of our hill and it's wide open.

Thanks for the details- I think we'd be too closed in for them to be happy. Even though the canal and river are fairly close, the garden is in the only open spot we have and the trees are quite tall on all sides now.

What a great garden you have. So very neat and well laid out. You view is amazing. I wish that I had to look at that.
I have tried for the Purple Martins for years, all that I get are Sparrows. I don't bother removing them anymore. I have conceded that I just have a sparrow house. Patti

Thank you, my husband is to blame for the order. I'm more of a chaotic planter. I can do my flower beds any which way, but the garden is his. I start the seed and help plant (with stakes and string) until harvest time. Then it's my turn again. We also have sparrows, but for some reason they will share the house with the martins.

What a gorgeous garden you have, Debby! Working in the garden would be an understatement. That one looks like full time employment. How large is it? What else are you growing? And what varieties of tomatoes?

Hi,
Thanks, my husband is the garden keeper after everything is planted. I don't do well in the heat. The garden is 70' x 43'. It seems to get bigger each year. My tomatoes this year are. A lot of varieties for sauces like cuore do bue, polka, and Italian heirloom. I've got Wes, Bradley, persimmon, pineapple, stupice, Juan flamme and about 20 other ones. |
