Default Pumpkin Question

Ive just harvested my Iron Bark pumpkins (Australian heirloom) but two had a small patch of root on there side so blew it off with the high pressure hose then put them in the sun hoping that might stop it from getting any worse, but i don't think its going to work, anyone know if there's something i can put on the exposed flesh to stop the root from spreading, did think of using wax maybe or petroleum jelly maybe..........?
