All about compression. Once they set up and especially once the roots take over they hold together very well.
The 3/4 inch goes right onto the 2 inch which goes right onto the 4 inch, block which is the big one in the pics. I have given up the 3/4 inch in favor of starting seed in DE though.
The 4 inch block maker is a single, so not really suited for serious volume but works great for home use.
They do make a 3 inch stand up version that makes 6 at a time as well as a stand up 2 inch that makes 12 at a time.
