Dog vomit
Here is a picture of the dog vomit slime mold (real name). I mulched the garden with old hay, and these slime mold fruiting bodies have been popping up all over the place. I feel quite lucky because slime molds are rarely seen outside of biology class rooms. They are very unusual life forms in that most of the time they exist as single aboeba-like cells feeding on bacteria. When the food runs out they migrate together, and coalesce into this large fruiting body, which forms spores. They are a model organism for studying cell-cell communication for medical tumor research.

Cool, first time I've seen or heard of it. Almost looks like pumice or volcanic rock. Ami

They showed this on the local news about a month ago. Even though they say it doesn't hurt plants in any way, I was still glad I didn't mulch as I had intended to. Just not attractive stuff to have in the garden!

I've seen something like that before in the garden and wondered what the heck it was.

I have it around my eggplant and peppers. I tried to scrape it up when the plants were smaller. It didn't hurt the plants so I let it be.
