Is this Demidov?
I was sent seed for Demidov, and Andrey has it listed as pl-this doesnt look pl to me, it looks rugose. Anyone grown this and can comment?

Michael,
I grew Demidov (seeds from Andrey) last year, and I got exactly what you have on the picture - short dwarf plant with rigose foliage. I know Andrey lists it as PL, so something is not quite right - either it is RL or the seeds are crossed. Where did you get your seeds? I was going to retry this year and grow both my saved seeds and some of the original, but somehow forgotten to start seeds, and already have more than enough to fill in the garden... :-) Will retry next year then. Keep us posted on your Demidov - I love your pictures!

Tania-I cant remember exactly who sent me seed, but she said she got hers from Andrey, grew it out and sent me seed. Its a nice little plant, so we shall see. I plan on saving seed.

Michael....you so kindly sent me some Brown Berry when I ask. In addition, Citron Compact. I sent the Demidov which orginally came from Tania. Mine were not PL either. A very interesting plant at only 18" tall
with rather large tomatoes for it's size. Patty |

That definitely explains why the your plant and my plant look the same!

Patty-Sorry that I forgot that you sent seed to me-you were so kind to do so. Andrey has emailed me and said the following: "Demidov has to be PL, I'm sure. Please, send me more pictures with
good view, please." So the question really is what do we have if Andrey is right?

If Demidov is Pl then what we got is some different variety maked as 'Demidov' - since both Patty and myself grew it from the same seed pack I received from Andrey in 2004, and we both got the same RL rigose plants.
Since yours is F2 and it looks exactly like what I had in F1, then it is unlikely to be a cross... Seeds mix up? Here is a description I found for Demidov: "excellent quality salad type fruits. For open ground. Mid-season. 105-110 days from germination to mature fruit. Dwarf plant. Fruits are round and slightly flattened, firm, pink-red with some green shoulders. 100-110g (~4 oz). For fresh use." http://72.14.207.104/search?q=cache:...a&ct=clnk&cd=1 Unfortunately no info about leaf type...

The mystery is solved-Patty and I got an email from Andrey where he said: "You know we used to classified tomato leaves only by 2 types: RL and
PL and usually connect rugose type to potato leaves. So everything is fine I think."

Yes, it's true. And 2,5 years ago when I just started to visit GW and other foreign web-sources and made my first international seed trades I just didn't care about leaves shape, because it's not our tradition. We just grow, can and eat tomatoes, fight with deseases etc.

Love this plant. A real winner!
Just harvested 10 large pink fruits from this compact plant. Very early for such large fruits. Planted out March frist in a 20 gallon container. First fruit harvested was 10 oz in 55days with the other nine this past weekend. Hope it flowers and puts out another batch don't know what to expect. Can anyone tell me? Largest fruit was 14 oz and smallest was 8 oz, most 10 oz. Taste was very good. Going to see how long they keep and then taste test again when very ripe. Michael |
