I too was suffering with a slow decline in the produce from my garden. I was convinced it was nematodes, disease and heavens knows what else.
I stopped everything, did a soil and nematode test, at the lab and talked with them about the results. Found out I was totally wrong.
What I have is a magnesium shortage. Seemingly a lack of magnesium will prevent the proper uptake of Potash, and we know that Potash is vital to grow roots, so the plant suffers. Leading to a variety of symptoms depending on plant species.
So, my advice, bite the bullet and get a soil test, for $20 it's well worth the effort. Correct any shortages, then concentrate on Activated Compost Tea, it will help your problems, especially compaction.
Now I'm trying to establish what affect magnesium shortage would have on the nutritional value of the plant and would it have detrimental affects on us?
