NewG:

I was forced to go to containers this year due to home foundation repair issues digging up all my beds (except one). I'm using RayN's earthtainer, which is a SWC. It was a project to build (as I'm notoriously un handy) but I built 3 in a weekend and could go much faster having built 3. So far, so good. A major advantage is the self watering component as that allows for some forgiveness if you are out of town a day or two. Ray has really put some thought into the design and his results (granted in sunny Cali and not hot and muggy Texas) have been astounding. I'll report back with results through the season. Whatever you do, good luck.

I am studying Ray's manual everyday! and I got some supplies already. But I am only planning to build one or two if I can do it. It is quite expensive (I spent too much money on the Texas tomato cage this year). So I like this just pots with mix, water and fert system. I will try this with the dwarf plants. Thanks for your encouraging.

Hiya Ted!

Sounds like you are settling in well to the new digs! Room to stretch out & grow them maters. Have gotten great germination from seeds you kindly sent - maters & peppers - Cuneo di ... Holy Kraps are shockingly vigorous little sprouters & growers!

Ted's Bed is in the process of evolving - so this year Ted's bed will be 5 - 15 gallon grow bags & black nursery containers. Managed to overwinter 3/7 pepper plants in the garage from last December - they'll be in 15 gallon pots this year. A good dose of horse manure tea & they are sending out all kinds of new buds - YAY! 2 Kung Pao hybrids & 1 Long Thick Red Cayenne - both marvelous & tasty producers in 5 gallon buckets. Garage must have been too cold, dark & dry for the habaneros - they bit it.

I planted some regular sized tomatoes in 5 gal buckets last year. I did get
tomatoes, but not as much as the ones in the ground. Over all was not
very happy with the 5 gal buckets for regular sized tomatoes. All will go
into ground this year except for the few dwarf's I have. I bought earthboxes
for some of my peppers, can't wait to try them out.

Stormy, you ain't supposed to tell about that pepper bed named after me.

I have finally gotten past the "initial nest building" here at the new place. The DW smiles more lately. I've staked out an "in-the-ground" garden and have begun the soil busting task. This soil here is so pretty that it just demands seeds and cultivating. The county extension agent (whom I met), said that I should add a bit of "fluff" and just plant it. I don't need to actually PLOW it. The rotatiller gets on down there quickly and (tear rolls down cheek) it's full of NIGHTCRAWLERS - all 5.3 acres!!!!!

As for this year, I have some "babies" pushing their heads up through the starter mix as I type this. I have one with 3 cotyldons.

Ted

I always like to hear about good germination from the seeds I send out. Those Corno di ... Holy Krap!!! peppers are actually super delicious roasted or fried.

Oh Oh, Container Ted is morphing into "Dirt Farmer Ted" or Doin It in the Dirt Ted". Here's a link to a company I just ordered some inoculants from, Rinconvitova. Got the Rhizoboost, Defensor, Actino Iron and Microbe Nutrients. As they are geared for the commercial farmer some of the products they sell are also for the hobby gardener. Super customer service. I'll post more in the Gardening in the Green forum. Here's a link. Ami
