Well my seeds should grow under my lighting? After reading several threads......I appear to be late on my seed planting issues. I plan on planting in the 2nd or 3rd week of May in Michigan. Any and all opinions are appreciated

For clarification, in case what I posted was confusing - it's fine to germinate at 80-85F, but once the seeds germinate, you'll want it cooler than that. I like to grow my seedlings at temps 70F or below.

Warmer temps favor fast (and lanky) top growth, cooler temps favor stocky plants and a good root structure. You want the latter.
So you recommend waiting to the seeds germinate then lower my height from the trays to get a lower temperature on the plants? Aquarium lighting must do the same though water to allow plants to grow along with C02 added for plant growth. Aquarium lighting to grow (plant life) through water is a higher (lumens) than your standard florescent light. The lights that I have should germinate seeds BIG TIME here. It kinda sounds like I should move my tomato soil wanna bees lower down to catch a lower temperature in my lighting?

I don't know exactly what you mean by aquarium lights, could you elaborate? What is the specific type of bulb? What you are using will determine how far you can or should have it from the seedlings.

I see earlier you said you are using a digital temperature sensor. So, are you talking about the actual soil temp? What I was referring to was the room temperature and don't measure soil temp myself.

The bulbs that I purchased were the right lumens for aquarium plant growing. Does it really matter as long as the soil and seeds get the right temperature to germinate and grow? I am learning and love my new hobby. I am gonna build my first 2 "earthtains" on the weekend. I already got most of the parts and need another trip to Lowes..........

Growth chamber lighting (rocket science analysis):
http://ncr101.montana.edu/Growth_Cha...dbook/Ch01.pdf

The goal with tomato seedlings is adjusting the temperature
after germination without lowering the light reaching the plant.
That is usually done by keeping them in a cool room just after
germination, but still keeping the lights close to the seedlings
(like 1 inch with standard 40W T-12 flourescent bulbs).
