aphids-potato leaf tomato
I was watering my plants that are hardening off for my second tomato planting and saw that I had a lot of aphids on some of them. I also noticed that my potato leaf varieties had the bulk of the aphids while the regular leaf plants had hardly any. Is this just a fluke or is there something that causes aphids to attack potato leaf plants more?
I tried that new Neem oil and Pyrethrin spray that I found recently. Will be checking to see how effective it is on aphids in a couple of hours. |

Maybe they prefer the thicker leaves, more to chow down on.

)&%+#! Aphids
Last year a friend of mine brought some tomatoes from Bonnie's for me to keep in my green house for a couple of weeks. I had hundreds of seedlings in there, many were fairly rare culinary herbs. Within a few days I had a gazzilion Aphids on every plant. I tried the soap, Neem, Pyrethrins and Sevin but was still loosing the battle. I finally went to Dothan Nurseries on Montgomery Hwy. and she recommended a spray ( I do not remember the name) and within a few days I never saw another Aphid. I don't like to use strong chemicals but I was about to loose hundreds of dollars worth of herbs.

Green lace wings or ladybugs are very effective, especially in greenhouses. I use green lacewings every summer-buy them about 2 or 3 times and they virtually eliminate my aphids on my garden shrubs, eggplant and cukes. Ladybugs are great, but they dont stay in the area for me.

I buy my green lacewings from a company located in Tucson where you are.
http://www.arbico-organics.com You might even be able to pick them up-I dont know where they are shipped from. Good service. Good product.

I've been growing cilantro plants around most of my aphid-problematic plants. The flowers of the cilantro/coriander help attract insects that eat aphids. So if you like cilantro or coriander, it'll help, but won't get rid of an existing problem.

I second Arbico-organics. I found them on the web and yes, they are in Tucson. They were one of the most reasonably priced and their service was excellent. I just applied mine this last week and I am already seeing a difference.

I've never bought green lacewings before, but Garden's Alive sells 1000 eggs for 14.45.

I didn't buy the adults, but rather the eggs. Arbico was $12.95 including shipping for 1000 eggs. I went the egg route because buying "live" bugs was cost prohibitive with shipping.
