Socrates X3R taste in Heirloom version?
I just tasted my first fruit from Socrates X3R. I know it's a hybrid, I got the seeds strictly based on the size and the description of the tall, vigorous plant...
The flavor is intense, sweet, tangy, fruity and very very refreshing, unlike any bell pepper variety I've ever grown. It really just wowed me. If you've grown it, do you know of any heirloom variety (of any color) that is similar to it in terms of the taste? Regards, D |

Can't answer your question D., but glad you posted about Socrates X3R. I also bought seeds based on the description, but the seedlings didn't survive to plant out last year. This year I have one that is ready to be transplanted, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it turns out - with great anticipation!

I've been growing bells for over 30 years and haven't found anything like Socrates in either a hybrid or heirloom. It is now my main bell because of it's taste, size, and consistent production. I've found two others that I like the taste of as well or better. One is Karma, makes a large thick walled pepper but the plant is too brittle and is constantly breaking off limbs and splitting. The other is Early Thickset which is my favorite tasting pepper but it is much slower to produce and is small.
