Sta-green brand flower and veg. planting mix?

There are a few different Sta-green products sold by Lowe's. I went to purchase some of their general purpose potting mix in 2.5 cu. ft. bags. None to be found at either store in town. Only had 32 qt. bags @ 7.32 a bag. I thought that was a bit high, as they were selling the big bags for around 11.00 earlier this year.

I noticed they had "flower and vegetable planting mix" in a yellow bag. 6.87 for 2 cu. ft.. The listed ingredients were very similar, can't remember if exactly the same. One thing I did notice was the label said that the flower and veg. mix was not recommended for container gardens. For the life of me, I can't figure out why?

My purpose is to mix this mix in the 3:2:1 ratio that Ray uses. I am wondering why this other wouldn't work. I had some here at the house (the flower veg. stuff), and it doesn't seem any different than any other potting mix as far as textures and density.

Had the very same experience. It seems pretty strange they don't keep up stock of their own product. I wasn't sure about the yellow bag either so I ask them to get a new pallet of the regular mix. I got 18 containers withe the 3:2:1 mix and so far I think it's great.

I called the manufacturer of Sta-green, and it is a discontinued product. Stores that carry it are basically selling backstock. Once it is gone, we will have to search for other economical sources of quality planting mix.

That's too bad I liked it much better than mg. Next year I think I'll buy a yard or so of compost and some peat and make my own. Pine bark fines...now that was a big pain in the keister to get a hold of.

Yep, discontinued. I was rather disappointing to see their 3cub.ft potting mix go away, I always liked it, and the price was right.

Here in Northern Calif., I have been using Kelloggs Patio Plus potting soil that Lowe's sells for 4.97 per 1.5 cube. The ingredients are very good and I plant directly in all my swc's with this product. Has anyone else ever used this mix. It's labeled potting soil, not potting mix, but it has bark, perlite, and other good things in the mix.

This would be a real bummer, as Sta-Green is $3.50 per cubic ft. while Miracle-Gro is $5.00 per cu. ft.

Here we go again searching for vanishing supplies!!! Still looking for a source for Pro Mix BX in No VA. Will be using it to make my own mix along withf Pine bark fines, Perlite, and Turface.

That is correct. I called the customer service number on the back of the bag, and the lady told me that Sta-green is discontinued by the manufacturer. I guess for now it is either mg or metromix 360, which is also very pricey.

I keep wondering why these things happen. First it was no more promix, now this. Very annoying. Not to mention the fact that Lowe's here is selling the 32 qt. bags for a whopping 7.32. Piracy to say the least.

I bought Sta-Green Flower and Vegetable Mix for $2.50 a bag at Lowe's here in Maine. It must have been a clearance sale. I bought enough to fill one of my 2X8 foot bed raised beds to a depth of 16 inches. The tomato plants in that bed are by far my healthiest and fastest growing. I really hate to see this product discontinued
