Default Miracle Gro Perlite

I bought a bag of Miracle Gro Perlite from HD and noticed that an 8Q bag weights 8.5lbs. A much larger bag of Perlite at my local hydroponic store weighs only 4lbs.

What's up with the weight difference?

I know the MG has a very small amount of nurtrients in it but can't see it increasing the weight all that much.

I'm perplexed!

Perlite does NOT weigh one pound per Quart!

Someone at MG must have the weight wrong - - or that is not really Perlite in the bag.

I have a bag in front of me, it is an 8-quart size and I weighted it on my kitchen scale and it weighs 8.5lbs!

I didn't open it...thinking of returning it.

I just weighted a second bag and it weighted 5.5lbs!!!!

Same volume....3lb difference!

I have a bag that has at least 2 quarts left in it and it weighs just over 1 pound, including the bag. My bag does not list a weight, only 8 dry quarts or 8.8 liters. Perhaps your bags were left outside at HD and have absorbed some moisture.

I agree with Tom, you have water weight in those bags. I bought a 4 CF bag that couldn't have weighed more than 10 LB.

That questionable Perlite has been returned to HD. Replaced with Espoma Perlite. I prefer the Espoma as it has no cheap synthetic fertilizer in it.
