If you think your sweet peppers will be hot because the hot peppers are close to them it aint gonna happen.

It will be the seeds that got crossed that will produce what they call a hybrid and it will be hot.

Not the original crop from the plants you put in this year.

No telling what a cross between a bell pepper and a Thai chile will look like.

The bells should be okay, are they hybrids?
I just about bet you get a cross from the other two, not all but some.
I think crossed peppers are fun.

We grow mostly cayenne amd jalapeno peppers. Most of the jalapeno's are pickled and both are used for pepper sauce.
The ones I want to save for seed are strung on a needle and heavy thread and hung in a warm dry place.

Usually there will be 50 or so on a string. I add to and use them during the season.

Prior to planting, I crush several and use a heat lamp to dry the seeds more.

I plant most of my peppers in groups. Each group is no farther than 25 yards from each other. Sometimes I will get a supposedly mild one that's almost too hot to eat.
I see an obvious out of place plant(color or shape) every once in a while. I don't worry about it because I don't trade or give away pepper seeds.
I do give away pepper sauce and pickled jalapino peppers to close friends and neighbors.

Years ago, my boss brought in some huge Sweet Bananas and said they were too hot for him. I tried one, about an inch off the tip. Way too hot for me.
Nothing being too hot for Homer, he bit off 5-6 in. and started chewing. In less than 3 min., he's flat of his back and choking. While the paramedics are trying to get him on
the stretcher, he wiped the tears away and blistered both eyes. We wound up causing a lost time accident at a nuclear plant. We blew a 3 million+ hour safety record.
It's a wonder they didn't run us all off.

They thought it was a cross between the Banana and a pepper sent from Thailand by his brother.

Ken,

If you saved the seeds from that pepper, I can suggest a name -- Nuclear Meltdown.

so if I see an odd looking thai chili or jalepeno next year, should I just pluck the plant and be done with it??

it should only happen in the individual pepper that was cross polinated,..right? so only THAT pepper's seeds will grow a cross??

Ken,
I planted what was advertised as HOT banana peppers years ago in my yard.
A neighborhood personality named Green Eyes would occasionally stop by and have a drink with me and smoke his pipe.

He saw the banana peppers on the plants and picked one.
I told him to be careful, they are hot.
He told me, "Man your crazy, ain't no banana pepper hot".

He chomped down the entire pepper and swallowed it.
Soon afterward he blew out all of the fire from his pipe, it looked like a volcano erupting.
His eyes were watering and his nose was running.
He drank all of his beer to no avail and asked for more out of his truck.
Once he recovered his constitution he said, "My god man, I thought I had seen it all but I ain't never seen no hot banana pepper".
"Where'd you get them things"?
I told him, "Wall-Mart".
He said, "Well I ain't gonna buy no peppers from them, I'm gonna get mine from the feed store".

From that time on he would drive by the house and leer at my pepper plants.

The guards confiscated the rest of the peppers and told Rex not to bring anything in that he didn't intend to eat himself.
We gave statements and signed papers for the next 4-6 weeks. I thought we were all going to get canned.

Laborors spent all the next day disinfecting our shop area. Rumor was that the peppers, bag and all, was thrown into one of the "gold room" furnaces.
This was where contaminated relays and electronic equipment were melted down and gold/silver/other precious metals recovered.

For the next six months, we were searched for contraband when we picked up our badges at the beginning of our shift. I think they were mad at us.

I like hot peppers and hot sauce, especialy jalapenos. Those peppers, I didn't want to be in the same room with.

correct.

crosses can be cool- no reason to throw it out unless you're short on space.
