STINK BUGS
I have asked this quwstion on the tomatoe portion, and never really got a solution. I have stink bugs, they completely destroyed my tomatoes, i pulled up the tomatoe plants and the bugs moved to my peppers, anyone have any ideas on a solution or method of getting rid of these fellows. I do know that they are a real problem up in va and the eastern coast.
Thanks |

these are mot the green ones but a smaller grey/brown, they are calling them mormated (spl) or something similiar to that. They bite the fruit and leave a little mark on it and with so many it renders the pepper unedible

Interesting... I wonder if something like this would work for squash bugs?

I've been picking noodle beans for the past couple of weeks, and today the brown stink bugs were en masse on the tops of the beans where they attach to the vine. I think I squished a couple of dozen of them. I really haven't seen much damage from them except for a few bit marks on the beans.
I think I pick them fast enough so the bugs can't get much for dinner. The beans I'm leaving for next year's crop have no damage that I can see. Guess they're not as tasty?! |

Why are these bugs called stink bugs? I squished couple of them to see how they smell and in my opinion they have a very intense and pleasant smell. Am I weird?

without seeing what these posters are saying are stink bugs the last comment makes me wonder whether they are spined soldier bugs which are good guys. they look virtually the same as a marmonated stink bug which is a bug guy. my pole beans often have spined soldier bugs on them and i leave them alone, if i accidentally get one in the grocery bag when picking pole beans i take it back outside and put it on the bean plants.
the spines on the ssb are longer and more pointed than on the msb also the msb has white sections on the antennae and on the outer edges of the shell. how to differentiate a marmorated sb from a spined soldier bug: https://www.google.com/search?q=how+...w=1183&bih=692 pictures of a marmorated sb: https://www.google.com/search?q=marm...w=1183&bih=692 pictures of a spined soldier bug: https://www.google.com/search?q=spin...w=1183&bih=692 i also see a lot of green stink bugs but no damage that i can attribute to them. stink bugs are supposed to stink when crushed but there's tons of different sb so maybe some don't stink? tom

I am from Florida but come to western Pa every summer to escape the heat and hurricanes. Two years in a row they were bad and basically there is nothing you can do but seal all the opening you can so they will not overwinter in your house. This year they are hardly around. My neighbor did show me a trick that all the people are doing for capture. You take a 16oz.plastic soda pop bottle cut the top off with 1-2 inches of of main body or container ,invert the cut off cap part upside down staple in place to the remainder of bottle.Attach a stick or small pole if you want and when you see one just scoop them in and they will not find the drop down spout to fly or crawl out. Also put screen on your plumbing vents on roof caus they are drawn to smell and heat and will crawl down, swim through p-trap into toilets and sinks inside house.Concensus is that over time natural predators and bio controls will control them as they seem to have done here in Pa.Good luck

Rutgers University is collecting data and specimens to help track the stinkbugs and study them. Feel free to send them one, you do not have to be a NJ resident as they are also studying their migration, DNA changes as they migrate, etc.
