I like using Foxfarm Oceanforest or Happy frog. Other seem in love with metro Mix 360 but I cand find it anywhere. as a seedling I feel as if soil is the least of your worries, as long as it is light and fluffy with plenty of oxygen. Even if you use a neutral medium such as grodan they will still grow for a few weeks before showing nutrient defficiency. KISS |

I use composted manure mixed with spagnum or mushroom compost. Most mixes work. A little trick is cover the seeds with about a 1/2 inch of the mix strained with a fine strainer. A little sand or perlite never hurts and helps with easy removal!

I use vermiculite watered with fish tank water and heat the germination chamber with a space heater. Pulling the sprouts out of the vermiculite for transplant is easy. I typically transplant very early, even before the second leaf set opens, as I don't fertilize at all until transplant. I have started seeds in pro-mix and compost, too, but it's just not as fast, although the sprout will grow much better once it does finally come up.
