Default Melons

Hi,

I have charentais, sugar, pineapple and horned melons. (they are now 2 weeks old)
There are a couple questions of which I can't find an answer.
I'm growing them in a greenhouse, so upright.

-You prune the melons, when they have 2 big leaves. They then make a couple stems on the side.
Do those stems become your main stems?

-How many stems should I grow?

-How long can a stem grow? And can they keep producing fruit untill the end of the season, or is there a maximum?

grtz,
Itoero

I don't know how to grow a melon in a greenhouse. Here in Florida I try to get the whole melon adventure completed by the end of June. Once the summer rains start that is the end of Melons for me.

I don't know if you could get them to behave differently in a greenhouse but most fiedl grown melons tend to set and ripen their fruit more or less all at once.

And how long does a stem grow?
Is it as long as tomatoes?

And what size do the stems grow into?
I'm wanting to buy some bamboo sticks as support, but I don't know what size.

That will vary with the variety of melons. I am not familiar with the ones you listed. Last season I grew Minnesota Midget on a 6 foot trellis and it was adequate.

Hi Itoero,

I grow melons outside on the ground and I don't prune them. Stems can grow up to 3 meters long, depend on variety.
Most melons will ripen within two weeks but they will continue to set fruits as long as the weather stays hot.
