I do remember that now, that the Hale needed another variety to pollinate. The last time I looked at a catalog of trees, I think there was only one other old variety like that. Modern varieties will pollinate each other. Drew or someone else can explain why much better than I understand it.

I was listening to the garden show Don Shore does out of Davis CA. He mentioned his mom had a low chill peach and a volunteer sprung up. They grew it, and it was superior to the mother plant. They kept the volunteer for 20 years. You don't have to have a rootstock.
I really just meant to say you're mistaken about the taste, but never thought it was not worthwhile to propagate, sorry if I did. We really need to save old trees, even if bad. I grow a wyeberry which is a cross between a blackberry and a raspberry. But boysenberry, loganberry, and Newberry are too, all taste better. But try to find a wyeberry, it is difficult if not impossible to find. It may be good for breeding stock as it is hardier than the ones mentioned. So I feel obligated to grow it, and you should regrow those trees for possible propagation stock etc.
Again sorry, I was rude, and not tactful at all, my bad.
No offense taken I've been on forums long enough to know that constructive criticism doesn't always come across as such when in a written post where you can't hear tones and inflection etc. I was bummed about crossing having no effect and the only reason I took the cuttings was to one day cross em. I took some more yesterday to take their place so we'll see how they work out
