It is possible to get free 55 gallon plastic barrels from kidney dialysis centers. It is where I got most of mine. Barrels stored dialysis solution which is not a toxic substance, mostly water with electrolytes. Some centers will have hundreds of these barrels sitting outside. Just ask for them.

Free would be so awesome. Sadly, I haven't found free yet. I pay $10 for barrels in my area.

Ok Guys I went to the source.
New bulk they are anywhere from $70 to $107 a barrel. Yes thats right they are expensive and will continue to go up with the price of oil. This is one of the very reasons things are costing so much. It depends on what goes in these barrels as to what the cost to the user is. Look at barrels as packaging. If your product you are selling is $1000 a barrel and your barrel cost is 100 then your packaging cost is $100. You product cost $900. You are now going to re package that product and put your name on it and sell it for much much more. You will turn $900 worth of product into $50,000 worth of product just by repackaging into smaller amounts. And sometimes selling stuff with a fancy name and get even more.\Her is an example Cotton seed meal 1 pound bag for your organic garden, $10. Same stuff for cows in the 50 pound bag $25. Lets forget shipping for now. So the product buyer now has a pile of scrap barrels they payed $100 a barrel for. They are making tons of money from the product they bought because they will then repackage the product and sell it for much more. The cost of the barrel is added to the price as operating cost which in turn will be a tax write off. But they still have that confounded pile of barrels what to do. Along comes bill the barrel buyer. He offers the manufacture or end user a certain price for the barrels and they jump on it, anything just get this stuff off out hands or we will have to pay more money to get rid of it. Well Joe the end user of the barrel sees Bill the scrap barrel buyer on the side of the road selling barrels. He is charging $35 a Barrel. He is thinking darn he only paid $5 a barrel for these and is making $30 a barrel. The next time he comes by I will see if he will pay $10 maybe $20 a barrel. Plus Joe's wife just came home with a rain barrel she paid $100 dollars for. He looks at the barrel and sees that it is made by and is the exact same barrel he just sold Bill for $5. It is called supply and demand. People have something everybody wants and the price can and will go up. The other thing that regulates the price is ignorance. The ignorance of the end barrel buyer like ourselves and the ignorance of the seller like Joe. Folks we did it to our selves the minute someone paid too much for a scrap $5 barrel. Worth |
