clematis

I think I want to add clematis 2-3 varieties to the garden .. (to attract bees and I think they look good).
Anyone grow them successfully in MA area? which varieties work here? Do they create volunteers that I can beg for? When is the best planting time?

They will grow good in your area. In fact the seed I have of several different Clematis all came from a friend up your way. The main thing is don't over water them and they like a big of sand in the soil.

It is very hard, imop to try and root cuttings, but if you want to pm me your addy and are not in a rush til next week til I can get into my flower boxes, I can send you some Clematis seed to grow if ya want.

They do attract the bees and the flowers once they get established are beautiful. Lots of folks use them to decorate mailboxes with down here , though the mail carriers have fits because of the bees when they trying to stuff mail in the boxes.

How long does it take for Clematis to seed? mine died I think

They never came up this year. I need to learn how to save seeds. If I had I would NOT be clematis-less right now...
They are so gorgeous in the spring. I wish they would bloom all summer.

Mine are perennial. For the first year I had them I was mistakenly coddling a three-leafed vine-weed growing in the exact same place that looked remarkably like a clematis! I had the whole trellis nearly covered with this weed-vine when I noticed the real clematis struggling to grow a couple inches off the ground.

It all depends upon the seed. Some will germinate in a few months and I have had some I have had to wait two years for.

Here is a really good site with lots of pics to show you how to germinate the seeds. It's alot to look over, but it has several different ways to do it.

Another way is to take like a clamshell type container that can be sealed tight and just moisten some vermiculite with water and hydrogen peroxide and add your seed and then just leave sealed til your seed germinate.

I'll find my seed and see what I have to share. I have several different types.
