Is damping off always terminal?

I planted a few seeds last weekend and one started to come up yesterday. I left a loose plastic cover on the cell and this morning it looked all fuzzy like it had damped off. I removed the seed with a small sprout coming out of it and sprayed it with water. I then replanted it and it is coming up again. Will it be OK or is done for? I know I'll find out in a day or two.

The fuzziness you saw on the sprout were probably tiny root hairs, and if so it's fine

I'm pretty sure it damped off. It was really fuzzy like it had a small ball of cotton around it. When it has happened like this in the past the seeds always died.

Whatever it was it is gone now and the sprout is up and growing fine.

Be careful about overwatering. Tomato seedlings are very sensitive to excess water around the roots and the moisture makes a perfect environment for phytothora to grow. Overwatering kills more seedlings than all other causes combined.
