Default Top Watering Containers

I have Earthboxes and I also have some larger regular containers that I need to water from the top. I would like to lessen my frequency of having to fertilize my top watered plants with a chemical water soluble fertilizer. I have previously used in these containers only potting mix consisting of mostly peat moss, with some vermiculite and perlite with some starter fertilizer (good for a few weeks) I have emitters that are on a timer for watering from top.

I would like to try using the Ozmokote smart released capsules mixed into either the top one or two inches of pot, or just mixed throughout the pot. Then supplement when needed with a water soluble fertilizer.

Has anyone had any success with such a mixture in containers and using slow release or timed release like Osmocote in them? I read about all the time on blogs, but never hear of anyone here using it.
