Bacteria predominate in a high pH soil.
Fungus like acid. Mycorhizae are fungi, so I'm not sure they apply here in Ilex's soil. And at a ph of 8 or better I wonder if there would be any at all?
i get your point though, microbial activity.

Yep, microbial activity like the Bacillus family may play a larger role.

Bacteria and fungi can be active at a wide range of PH, in general many fungi can tolerate a lower PH than many bacteria and many bacteria can tolerate a higher PH than many fungi, but these are PH extremes. 8.0-8.5 I wouldn't consider an extreme PH. Plant roots and microorganisms have some control over the
PH of their immediate environment too. Even if the PH is not optimal for many plants or the microorganisms, some can adapt and survive at least.
Whether this is a factor in that region of Spain I don't know.

Thank you Ray. I've read that somewhere too. I just can't remember where at the moment.

The only vegetables that have problems are in the bean family. Some pea varieties do look very yellow and grow badly. Others grow well. About half of beans either don't sprout or just die suddenly. I think it's mostly some kind of fungus present.

There are a couple things that dont like the clay. I feel my clay has a bigger impact than ph. We used to sell clay for the tile industry, so soils can get quite heavy.

Ilex, send me some soil.
I want to sample it. I really want to know what your base saturation percentages are.
