Surround WP/Kaolin
Anyone have experience with using this? Seriously thinking of giving it a try after last year's loss from Japanese beetles and stink bugs! HATE using Sevin dust but resorted to it last year...unfortunately you could hear them LAUGHING at me while I was applying it. It was a total fail

I'm using it this year, so far no complaints but too early to tell.

Kaolin is supposed to help greatly with any bug that sucks on leaves. I haven't used it, but would love to hear results. For me, I was hoping to use it to battle red spider mites. So far, haven't had them this year, likely due to our cooler, over cast weather, and that it is just May.

I wonder if it is too late to put out beneficial nematodes? No diseases but plenty of lost blossoms. Same thing as last year. I did put out sticky traps. Has anyone had any success with spinosad for thrips?

I think the beneficial nematodes come in different types. One mix of them is ok to put out before it's too hot and a different type when it is hot that supposedly helps with spider mites. If you get them from the place recommended by Ozone (see post with thripes in the title), they have an email person who will answer questions who is extremely knowledgeable and answers emails quickly. Run it past her for sure.
As for Spinosad - I'm putting it out, but I still have thrips - just as I put out nematodes. I think I've had control, but not elimination with Spinosad. I've only put it out once so far, as I've had to focus on disease with this incredibly wet Spring. Good luck! Dewayne |

I hope everyone who uses any spray or dust for any reason uses personal protection equipment regularly. That means respirator/mask rated for what you are spraying with filters changed on a regular basis and gloves and outer wear to keep any of the sprays off your skin. Organic does not mean it is safe to wear as perfume or inhale like it is flowers. So, please everyone, for your own safety OWN it and USE it everytime you spray/dust.

I use a full respirator with P100 filters. The family is not allowed out until the next day when the dust is fully settled.

Can you guys recommend a brand or type of respirator? I've always just worn a bandana and breathed through that and spray in low or no wind conditions. Maybe that's not good enough.

You probably want a cartridge respirator, like this one:

Food grade DE is considered relatively safe, calcined "pool grade" DE is considered hazardous

for sprays use a respirator like cole robbie recommended. anything is better than nothing. You should never be able to smell or detect any of your spray. It is amazing to remove the respirator and notice all the smells that were being filtered out. a mask is generally used for dust applications, but you can use the respirator for both.

My regimen of kill or not have food seems to have worked. I sprayed with liquid sevin vegetable safe kind from walmart mixed according to directions, well that was rainy part of year a week later I was still infested so I hit it with a spray of malathon same vegetable safe stuff from walmart, again more rain shortly afterwards, but control had begun. Problem then was my tomato plants had some curled leaves on tops of plant, and some black fungus gunk so I hit with a couple spray cycles of docanol which seems to have cured that. I did pull about 4 plants not sure if they drowned or what it's hard to tell, after that I put a good dose of powder seven on plants and we have not had rain until yesterday, my tomatoes are doing great. I plan to dust again in next few days because of hard rain washed sevin dust off, but thinking of what killed off the thrips and tomato juice suckers I'm pretty sure malathon was the answer. I also sprayed under the leaves best I could, my tomatoes have run wild growing out of sides of cages out of top of cages around 6' high. Tomato sets from bottom to top blooms everywhere, it's beautiful !! We have had no rain in last 3 weeks dry and hot, however I mulched heavy with pine straw, and put chicken manure down mixed in dirt good a couple weeks after planting, this is by far one of the best tomato growing seasons I have had..... I hope others got control of the thrips, as mentioned I try to be nice and organic, but I won't play nice if the critters don't. I also remember daddy sprayed some neem oil on his tomatoes, but I sprayed his when I sprayed my plants, the malathon done the work, maybe it was the rotation of sevin and malathon ?
Now my corn is dry, I hope it even makes I have ears not mature but with corn on them looks about a week away, problem is it really needed water the last month and didn't get any. |
