ornamental peppers?
Anyone with experience growing out ornamental peppers? I was thinking about buying seed for explosive ember, black pearl and or medusa. I've heard mixed things regarding ease of growing though.

Black Pearl is very easy. It did very well in a container and got extremely large. We bring it inside during winters and survived three years before my wife decided to let it stay outside this past winter. Very pretty and the peppers are abundant and glossy purple.

Do it.
They are beautiful, what do you have to lose? More interesting and longer lasting than flowers. Numex twilight and bolivian rainbow were my gateway drugs. Was just picking some out for 2018 garden. hocus pocus, chilly chili, chinese 5 color, fireworks. |

Medusa is a tiny little plant with spectacular upright needle pods. For some reason I thought it was patented, but I see that seeds are available from several sites. Also consider Numex Twilight. Black Pearl is probably my favorite ornamental.
Everyone should grow some ornamental peppers!

Chihuahua sized.
Some Orange Thai** show similar but green >> orange pods, and are a bit larger. They are commonly grown for eating. (Medusa is tasty too.) Note that all 'ornamentals' are edible, but they are grown for their looks. Black Pearl, for instance, is very seedy and some people (like me) think it tastes soapy. ** There are some 70 native Thai varieties, and only a few names in common use. "Orange Thai" indicates a plant from Thailand with an orange pod, but that may cover a dozen varieties. When you look for seeds, look at the pictures.

I had several kinds last year. I liked Razzamatazz. The pepper were quite edible, too, like a jalapeno. Black Pearl is very pretty. I also like Chile Conga, which is a tiny plant that is happy in a 1-gallon pot.

That's not a Black Pearl. BPs have the same color pod, only spherical (pearls) and black leaves.
I would like to know what it is, though, Lastfling. Lovely!

Matter fact I have eaten several. Most have not been hot from top to approx midway then start picking up heat toward the stem. They haven't been extremely hot by any means with a nice flavor. Of course that's now, things may change 😋 Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
