It's about spinach seeds, so I suppose you have to project what sort of results you might get for the pathogens common to tomato seed coats.

I'll keep looking for something more related to tomato seed treatments where there's some efficacy data.

The only pathogen named in the spinach study that also affects tomatoes is V. dahliae, the cause of Verticillium Wilt. That's fine but the study also said that there was at least one other fungal pathogen that was not eliminated, so not all tomato pathogens might be lessened by hypochlorite.

I thought it was in this thread that you reported about TSP being able to destroy TMV and yes, I've known about that for many years. But TMV is no longer the problem it used to be.

I'd be far more interested in what NAOCL does for the common foliage pathogens as well as Fusarium, etc.

Better you than me doing some ressearch now b'c I'm having major problems with my DSL line and spent over two hours on the phone with Verizon today. At least I made some progress b'c two techs from India independently found there was a "fault" on the line, which I've known since Easter Sunday. When I finally reported this two weeks ago I got back a robotic call saying the problem had been resolved. It isn't just my problem b'c two others on my road have the same problem. Ah well, with age comes patience, so "they" say, but "they" lie.

Carolyn, yes I found some information about sodium hypochlorite (NAOCL) being near 100% effective on Fusarium but it was I believe in either maize or evergreen shrubs. I'll look again. I don't know if it would even apply to Fusarium re Solanaceae.

I'll try to search for more on TSP and bleach, but so far the results have been sparse for Solanaceae related diseases. Lots of recommendations to use TSP and bleach, but no specific data on efficacy. I did find one that related to peppers and that the seed coat could take a one hour soaking in "10% NAOCL" which may be the source of the original recommendation for "10%" bleach.

There also is a lot of conflicting information out there whether bleach soaks reduce viability or actually enhance germination. Most of it seems to indicate it can reduce viability in older seeds but enhance germination in new seeds, especially peppers.
