I wonder if the white background in your first pics threw off the camera's exposure meter to make the leaves come out so dark. Can you try taking a pic of the stems and maybe some more of the leaves without that bright white background and see if that helps? It would be really helpful to get a good look at the stems you are concerned about, especially if they really do look just like the ones in platys' pic.
