If it reaches my goal of 600 lbs I'll rent a trailer and drive it down to a pumpkin weigh off event in Doylstown PA.

Cross your fingers with your toes for me!

Wow!

Yes it's my rookie year at this.
The seed for the plant came from one of our local giant pumpkin clubs members.
The parent weighed in at 943 pounds.

Not too bad.

Jan,

Depending on the size of the pumpkin I will or will not spend the money to haul it 30 mts south to the weighoff.

Compared to the seasoned veterans in the local club mine will appear very small even at 600 lbs but we all have to start somewhere.

Many at that weigh off will eclipse the 1000 lb mark.

We shall see.

julia I watched a show about the giant growers out west and how they had trailers just to haul in their monsters....LOL

Since we have limited garden space this isn't something to be in my furture, now if we were back in KY with our 5 acres, I think I might would try one... maybe....

Julia, what fun!

Good luck!

There's something about pumpkins that just make me smile, and the bigger the pumpkin, the bigger the grin. There's a giant pumpkin parade & weigh-off in a town about 15 minutes from me and I love to go out and watch. (My favourite part is that there's a prize for "prettiest pumpkin over 600 pounds"---it's true that a lot of the giants have a rather droopy look, though that is part of their charm, IMHO!)

Never been tempted to get into growing giants myself---I don't think I have the stomach for it! Too much chance of heartbreak at losing a big 'un late in the process. Growing 90 tomato plants suits my temperament better. I admire your fortitude!

My sister lives in Nova Scotia and we once visited Howard Dill's farm where the Atlantic Giant pumpkin was bred. It was early October---what a hoot to see a field full of HUMONGOUS pumpkins.

There's a festival out there where people scrape them out and turn the shells into boats and have a boat race.

I'll be cheering for you.

Too bad tomatoes and pumpkins can't be crossed.
