We grow a deep red wine colored lettuce. We were given seeds by a lady who grew vegetables for the upper scale restaurents in the Seattle area. The variety was of French origin and had a wine name.IE Cabernet or Bourdeaux. My wife has 5 plantings separeted by 30 days. Her Korean friends all make repeated visits for lettuce. Can't give you the exact name of this variety which is the only lettuce we grow but I can send you seeds if your interested and shipping is free as well.

Follow-up previous posting.
Just checked out lettuce on the Territorial seeds website and they have a variety called Merlot which looks exactly what we grow and it has a wine name as well. Could be what we have but no guarantee.

Not to hijack the thread, but I just want to make a strong recommendation to Gary to consider replacing his designated futile Cream of Saskatchewan space with lettuce. Or become a Browns fan.

I really like a blend from Baker Creek called Rocky Top. It's mostly reds, heat resistant and just delicious.
I also like some of the red leaf lettuces from Pinetree. |

Believe it or not, home grown iceberg lettuce is amazing.
Always plant Mesclun, too. We're enjoying a mix called Dragon Stir Fry mix this year, too. |
