Spectacular, artistic and informative; these pictures belong to the pages of a magazine (National Geographic).

Some in our area think Spring is here when the flocks of Robins show up, others when the Cedar Waxwings make their appearance. It's not truly Spring until you see the first new Mantis patrolling your tomato seedlings. This little guy is less than 1/8th of an inch long. As a size comparison, that pink, out of focus blob in the foreground is an aphid. The Mantis decided he wouldn't tackle that one....yet.

The biggest I have ever seen are up in Cairns in northern Queensland- Ruddy monsters up to six inches long, it amuses me the way that they turn their heads and look at you.
But the biggest shock I ever got was when I was in Tana Rahta in the cameron highlands in malaya- I caught a giant Cicada there that was over six inches long- it didnt make any noise when I caught it and put it in a container, when I got back to the place where I was living, I took the lid off the container and it flew out around the room- shreiking like mad and making a hell of a noise, up until that point I didnt know that Cicadas could make a noise with their mouths- other than the whistling and humming noise they make with their wings and other body parts- it realy scared me to hear it, and loud too. My personal favourites though- are the big Atlas moths (hercules)- huge moths with a wingspan of up to a foot accross and very colourful patterns. |
