Yes the oil is what causes the skin reaction and if you have the oil under your nails or on your hands, you will definitely spread it by scratching.

The actual rash does not spread by scratching, it just seems to.

I had a really bad case of it last summer when I helped trim an overgrown hedge that was full of PI. I wore long sleeves, gloves and a hat and somehow it got all over my arms and even on my neck. I think that I was pushing the hat out of my eyes and touched my neck but anyway it was so bad that I actually considered going to the doctor. It itched almost unbearably for 3 weeks until it finally went away.

The oil can be spread. But you're right that it doesn't necessarily show up immediately.

Yes I should clarify my statement: The actual rash does not spread by scratching it. That is what I meant and it shows up days later.

Prednisone will halt the spread quickly. Take it from the easily infected! I learned long ago to go straight to the doctor at first sign. Also , a tip - run the absolute hottest water you can handle over the rash, I mean HOT. It will buy you hours of relief from the itch. I don't recommend this for children for obvious reasons, but if you get PI rash try this tip.

If you think you may have it on you scrub with soap and water to get the oil off.
That oil can stay on tools for years.

My father used to listen to what was then called "Golden Oldies" I just think of music as music. I still think of Calamine Lotion when I see poison ivy. Maybe this song I listened to so many times as a child...kind of has some to do with it.

My growing partner has a vine growing up a tree that looks like a cucumber but never produces, and it is not an annual. Its right at the gate entrance, and I always wonder why he doesn't reach up and get it off the tree. We are seldom there at the same time, but I will have to point it out to him.

These are pics of the cucumber-ish vine. I read it is a weedy relative of a melon. I'm still not 100% certain of its identity. Is it safe just to rip out without wearing a hazmat suit?

Its taking over the garden. The photo shows it choking out a spirea.
