Here's a link, but it's in Europe: https://tomatoeden.com/?155,bloody-butcher
I didn't know a compact version existed! Linda |

I wonder if that's REALLY BB?
I have grown a few small pot. leaf early indeterminate tom's. Kotlas was the first, back around 1994 or so. I think...don't know, think... the original breeding was in Central Europe, and spawned Kotlas/Sprint, Stupicke/Stupice (2-3 subtly different variants?), Roter Gnom and Lycoprea (multiple variants, again) I think...don't know...think...that some western variants like BB, Kimberley, another Canadian Prairie variety whose name escapes me at the moment and Imur Prior Beta from Scandinavia, also likely carry some of these genes. The smallest of these that I grew was Lycoprea variety 1; in a 10" hanging basket it will grow to 20" and offer about 18-24 1.75-2 oz sweet red fruits. In the soil you might get 24" and 4 more tomatoes. Kotlas is my favorite; under the most favorable conditions the plants will stretch to 40" and offer up about 4-5# of tomatoes...not as smooth and round as the Camparis we buy in the grocery stores, but twice as big and just as flavorful. The compact version of Bloody Butcher is interesting. I'll probably try it next year. I am looking for early shrub varieties with excellent taste. Bloody Butcher tastes really good?

I have both.
The compact version and the indet one. Indet one came from TomatoFest, the bushversion from a German Vendor. Bloody Butcher is every year in my garden! Here is Jeff Casey's description:- Bloody Butcher Early Potato Leaf Bloody Butcher rivals all other extra early varieties that I have grown given its superb taste and productivity. It will produce up to 10 per truss and each fruit will weigh on average 2 ozs. (55 g). Last edited by asmx91; April 23, 2021 at 03:24 PM. |

I think maybe it’s time to investigate some of the new work that’s being done in hybrid beefsteak breeding. The old standards like Better boy etc etc are slowly being eclipsed in flavour and vigour and disease resistance by some exciting new tomatoes being released from a variety of sources and including some beautiful colours such as were previously seen only in heirlooms. Red beefsteaks are great but there are lots of new and exciting ones coming out to look into. I’m growing the new release Benevento from Fred Hempel at Artisan seeds this year and I’m really looking forward to it for example.

Me either. Flavour is very important.
My answer was to the original question Regarding hybrid beefsteaks. Bloody butcher is a nice early open pollinated salad sized tomato from my memory of it. Neither hybrid or beefsteak not especially sweet from my experience and that’s what I am referring to in answer to the original question looking for recommendations of Sweet Hybrid beefsteaks. I just sent a note to https://tomatoeden.com/?155,bloody-butcher to see about selling/shipping to the U.S. The postage is a little high, but not for registered mail (vs. USPS).
We'll see what they say... -Larry |

Hello Larry,
why do you want them from Europe? Burpee is American, isn't it? And they have Bloody Butcher in stock. Milan HP |

Milan, it's because Eden sell the "compact" version of Bloody Butcher.

Whoops, sorry Linda. Still a newbie.
In that case, I can offer some help. I can get the seeds from GB delivered by a friend. And send them to you. You've made me very interested in BB. So I'd do it as much for myself as for you. Milan |

Hi Milan-
I appreciate the kind offer, but this is a next year's project. I'm interested if the tomatoeden does sell across the pond to the U.S. But I'll remember your offer next year if need arises. I'm growing regular BB this summer, and I'm also growing Patio Choice Red which is a cocktail sized tomato. This is the first time I've grown either. (I have also grown Kotlas and Stupice) I want to see how these two compare, as well as with some others early varieties I'm growing. |

Hello Larry,
the thing is that I am now tempted to order the seeds for myself and my friend Vladimir. Sure, not for this year, it's a bit too late even here. I don't know for sure if direct orders from the USA are strictly forbidden, but I believe there's at least a lot of bureaucracy involved. The seeds aren't expensive and the postage isn't a problem. I'll let you know if I have done it. And if I do, I'll order an extra packet or two. Just in case. Milan HP Last edited by Milan HP; April 25, 2021 at 05:05 PM. |
