I have some pretty bi colors from seed this year. Really nice to get something other than just red or yellow. However, this pic is after Jap. Beetles lunched............Patty

Yes, all from seed. Most all of my dahlias have been grown from seed and then saved tubers. This spring I purchased Otto Thrill and one cactus type from Aldi. No idea who the parent might be as I traded for all seeds a few years back to get started. Now saving from my own stock. Last year was the first for the full bicolors to show up. I have had single bicolors, mostly yellow streaked with another color.

Patty, I didn't realize you could grow the big showy ones from seed. One of the ones I lost was like your middle pic purple bicolor.

Can you get any blooms the first year, or only after the tubers get good sized? I always deadheaded all the blooms, so never thought to look for seed.

Yes, first year seedlings are mostly all blooming now. THey are smaller plants the first year and flowers more adbundant the second year. The three above were last summers. This year my seeds were from T & M and getting more solid colors. I have less this time because aphids managed to get to a tray in the laundry room under lights in the middle of March. (how??) From now on all dahlia seedlings will be in the basement under lights!

I love dahlias almost as much as tomatoes ...... Papageno is a nice sturdy plant only about a metre in height - with lovely large blooms. This one is just starting to open (click pic for close up!!)

It truly is a

shame - any way to pic them off? To date slugs have been my worst enemy, but plants have now outgrown their threat........ what are those critters anyhoo?

Gorgeous colors on the dahlias! I LOVE the pale pink and yellow mix.

Patty, I'm not a violent person, but I'd be out there pinching and crushing those beetles with my bare fingers! The nerve of those two apparently procreating on the chewed up blossom! Sheesh!

this year I started to expand my gardening skills beyond the vegetable garden and propagating dahlias was one of the first experiments. Rooting the first (forced) shoots is so easy and they all flower well so it might be in between bying a lot of tubbers and sowing seeds economy wise : just by one tubber from the variety you like and you can have at least 5 extra plants if you like.

Yes it's sad, but it's just one of the reasons why I plant dahlias. Since they are a magnet for the beetles, my pole beans and grapes usually go untouched. And, if you plant enough dahlias, the beetles can't get them all.
