This is a real question because I don't know otherwise. Is this an improvement?

If I had to guess, I'd say that sign looks about 1975 vintage...

The older ones that aren't that old maybe last year have a big Ball name in them. My new lids look just like the ones salt has. I just went out and checked and the 1/2 gallon jars I bought at tractor supply has the same sign on it with those lids. Worth Last edited by Worth1; October 29, 2017 at 03:08 PM. |

I posted that exact thing somewhere earlier this canning season Salt... WHAAAT? those jars had surly better hold a seal better than 18 months. is this for people ( newbie canners) thinking the you have to use up what you can with in 18 months? my MIL had a jar or two of plum jam or somethingsuch stuff from the 70's that she found a few years ago and gave it to the son of the woman who helped her make it... he ate it and lived to tell about it.

uh huh. those old atlas jars that weigh twice what the new ones weigh... I think I have used them more than 3 times each. and my mother in law at least as many times... who know where she got them from.

Our son bought them today at Spring Market. He paid $10 for 12 jars/lids/bands.

not a bargain but it isn't any worse than most prices I have seen either. I think it is ridiculous how expensive jars are. it isn't like you buy them with anything in them... now you have to do the work to put something in them. I can't believe how cheap a jar of jelly is and it comes in a glass jar from a commercial cannery. I am always delighted when I get some for free or if I find them at goodwill. the more often you fill them though the more money you have saved or have eaten better than had you not done the work to fill them.

Salt look for coupons at HEB in the jar section sometimes they have 2 or 3 dollars off no limit.
If they are wide mouth pints I think they go for 9 dollars there maybe less. |

ever made Beautyberry Jelly? I tried it... I thought it was so boring before I even got it done that I was dumping copious quantities of cranberry juice into it. the reviews were it was pretty tasty, but I can't figure out how something with no taste would be tasty at the end of the process... it was sickening sweet... that was it.... and an odd faintly fruity floral-y taste. wont do it again. it is too much work to pick the berries and make juice out of them.

yeah, I have heard they are weeds for some people but not here. maybe they would taste better if they had been growing during a wetter year. they were beautiful... but boring.
