Step One Step Two Step Three (place bottom and cages inside) Step Four (I use something to hold the tote half out of the way piece of metal,PVC pipe orbungy cords work well also. After placing the weed screen on the bottom and sides I then lower it back down.) |

GHurt,
Very nice job!! One option you may want to consider. On the unused tote top, cut off the top 1 inch all around including the handles. Then, the "sleeve" will fit all the way down to the aeration bench inside. A further option is to take this sleeve and put around the outside, as kind of a girdle. This will provide better UV protection as well as keep the plant roots cooler in the hot Sun. Raybo |

delson,
Really nice job!! (My Mother would have made me peel off the Rugged Tote labels, though.) I couldn't see the tops - - did you cut off the top inch with handles, or, did you leave them intact? Raybo |

i left them in tact, was thinking about cutting off the handles but now thinking it would give me more leverage moving or lifting.

delson,
Yes, I agree. The extra construction around the handles and lip should add to its structural integrity (let alone risking cutting a finger off trying to cut the top 1 inch off.). Raybo |

also catching it into the toggle bolts should help it from bulging.

delson,
The "new" Rugged Totes appear to have better crack resistance and are more opaque than the former Rubbermaids - - but they seem to "bow" more than the Rubbermaids. The outer "sleeve" with the toggle bolts should help minimize the bowing effect. BTW, where in the City are you located? Raybo |

Wow, Tomatoes growing in the middle of Brooklyn!! Good stuff! I'll bet your neighbors will be green with envy.
Were you able to source the Bark Fines and Perlite for the 3:2:1 Combo Mix? Raybo |

delson,
I haven't seen the bark size of either, but I think the Cedar Mulch will probably be a better option. This is about the bark size you want: Raybo |
