Today, I got our onion bed ready to plant lots of mustard greens tomorrow. I had to replace a section of fencing beside the onion bed because last spring - the tiller decided climb up the fence. The tiller won.

RKN are the bad guys of nematodes.

I bought them beneficial nematodes once. $32 got me about a teaspoon worth. I am sure they will help, but I am not a millionaire.

We did not have RKN trouble through July, but the Fall tomatoes and cucumbers set out in July did get some root galls. They're not too bad, more on the cucumbers than the tomatoes, and the worst roots were high in the soil, where they sprouted from the buried stem. Went ahead and planted that row in Elbon with alfalfa, vetch, and clover. Got a new bag of Elbon from Justin Seed to put into the rest of the rows where the SunnHemp with Sudex is finishing up. Figure to mow and posthole plant through the live rye mix cover (again) in March.

I just got home from shopping and noticed the struggling Pruden's Purple plant looking really bad. I took a couple pictures before shoving the roots into the burning barrel.

Worth, while looking for pictures of RKN damage in okra - I found this picture. https://www.google.com/search?q=rkn+...lnJntt1zd8M%3A I thought about your garden when I read where the picture was taken.

I planted some Louisiana Green Velvet okra in an area where I had never planted it before. I pulled it today. It grew to 25-28 inches tall and it stopped growing back in late August. The weather conditions and planting area was perfect for growing okra. It should have grown between 4 and 8 feet tall. I took some pictures and they look a lot like those in the pictures above. I expected to find galls, but didn't find any. They just stopped growing.

Every once in a blue moon, something happens, and you start to understand. My wife of 31 years told me, "I don't really like tomatoes." I listen to her above all else.

She made my indecision much easier for 2017. No, I'm not going to graft. I'm not going to grow in pots or EarthTainers. I cannot afford those things anyway. I'm going to plant Elbon Cereal rye overwinter. It will either work or not.

I appreciate all of the advice offered. Tomatoes either grow in the ground or they don't.

When my wife told me that she really doesn't care for tomatoes - it changed my views.

Today starts the next step in trying to get the RKN population down. It was chilly this morning after a cold front went through. I had to wear sweatpants in the morning. We started tilling the soil to get it ready to plant the Elbon cereal rye.

The weather forecast made it sound like I needed to plant soon, but it has just changed and next week features high temperatures in the 80s. Next weekend is supposed to be highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s. I'll most likely plant then. Oh well, that'll give me 6 days to rest. I think I'll leave the ground in furrows until the day I plant - that way the soil will get some extra air.
