My mom was cutting out triangles for a quilt one time and kept tossing the piece she used to cut the martial out with in the box.
In other words she didn't keep the same pieces as a pattern.
When she was through the triangles had slowly but surely gotten bigger and had no idea why.
My father and I knew right off the bat.
I dont know why she wasn't using a piece of hard card board from a shoe box or something.

An interesting take on erosion control I spotted along the side of the road in southern WV last weekend.

That is interesting. As the bags get wet, they would turn into bricks. It might actually work.

On another thread about tomato jam Steens syrup came up and then popcorn balls.
It is a little time consuming as is all candies are when dealing with boiling syrup and sugar.
Another thing is the stuff is as dangerous as napalm.
The only difference between my recipe and the one Steens has is I used a little over 3 quarts of popcorn instead of 2 quarts.
Here they are old school popcorn balls.
Once the syrup gets brittle in cold water ad the butter stir and work fast.
Use a big spoon add a little stir add more stir and do it again but you have to work fast.

Gallina Pinta (abbreviated)
  • -Hominy canned
  • -Beans (peruanos, mix, up to you)
  • -whole onion
  • -whole garlic cloves
  • -Tail
  • -Chamorro/Chambrete (leg-hoofs) or ribs with meat attached (with these it can get quite greasy and it may require removing most of the liquid gold to keep it AARP friendly)
  • -Green Pepper (spice level up to you, but light green ones work best, sliced in long finger lengths to insure they survive to the end)
  • -Spice profile is typical northern MX, you know the players already (oregano, cumin, onion powder, et al)

Tail 1st, then 2nd type of flesh, then the beans with onion + garlic (whole so you can pull em out later, liquefy, and return to mix), then hominy (already cooked if canned), finally peppers. You know how long.

Allow to co-mingle overnight in fridge (after it cools of course).

Reheat over flame and serve it up with typical menudo service (diced onion-chives, oregano, powdered chiltepin, cilantro, finely diced lengths of green cabbage and radish can come in and play too). Fresh bolillos/birote go well with it, as do good corn tortillas. Enjoy!

PS Happy Bday!
It took me awhile and couldn't remember where you put this recipe.

But I think I am going to get started today.
Now I have to figure out what beans I want to use.

Thanks.

Worth, your popcorn balls look really good. As a child my mother would make popcorn balls during Halloween for the trick or treaters. (She wrapped them up in saran wrap.) We did not get many way out our way, so we would eat the extras. It brings back great memories, and I can actually smell the popcorn and the syrup cooking up in the kettle.
I made popcorn balls for my children and their friends when they were younger, but now that they are older they prefer rice krispy treats as an occasional treat..
