Default The EarthTainer "Farm" July 1, 2009 Photo Update

I'll post an update once per month. Plants now growing towards (or out) of their 74 inch cages. Marianna's Peace now 7 ft. tall.

Marianna's Peace:

Bloody Butcher began with ripe fruit in early June. Taste was fair. Hege German was the first large beefsteak-type to ripen:

(Thank-you Suze):

Purple Haze F1:

Dona:

Black Krim:

Paul Robeson:

Another variety that I *thought* was Black Zebra does not appear to be so:

It came from seeds from the 2007 NORCATT at Wild Boar Farms event:

Can you identify it???

So far, it is the tastiest one of this early season.

The "New" Tomato-tone vs "Old" Tomato-tone trials on several plant pairs continues, with thew Old formulation clearly producing taller plants and on average, 20% more fruitset. My trials with mixing one bag of Old and one bag of New are showing promising results. Goose Creek (New on the left plant):

First crop of corn has been picked with moderate results. Ears were about 5" to 7" long. Legend, on the left, Seneca in the next 'Tainer, and the new crop of Honey Select Triple-sweet in the 2 right 'Tainers:

Just for fun, I measured the tassels in the right 'Tainers and they are 9 ft. 6 inches above the moisture barrier.

The Gotta Have-it is doing well again in the 'Tainers this season:

On several stalks I am seeing 2 ears per:

...and the Pepper plants are getting in stride with the warmer weather:

So far, so good. Moderate Powdery Leaf Mildew to contend with, but Exel LG seems to be keeping it under control.

Hi, Ray! Is that the Big Rainbow/Green Zebra Cross? I was looking at WBF site and I was not sure of the labels. Anyhow, what a beauty.

Thanks for sharing.

Sincerely,

Annapet

Great to see a posting from you Ray! You have been missed. Tomatoes look wonderful, as does the corn.

Good to hear from you.
The plants look great, I think I will fry bacon when I get home from work. I picked more tomatoes today than I have at one time in the past which surprises me since it is so hot and dry. I am watering daily.

Hey Remy and all,

Been quite busy for quite a while. Had a new "seedling" (actually Grand-seedling) born in late April:

..and the family moved to Honolulu last week, so have been packing them up, etc. Have had to book flights for Dear Wife every 8 weeks to get her Grandma "fix".

Back to the tomatoes, just picked the Marianna's Peace today. Weighed in at 1 lb. 3 oz.

Now, this is my favorite so far:

Thanks Ted,

In comparing the photos you and I took, mine have a distinctive green / silver striping, unlike the ones in your photos. I thought Black Zebra was red, with pure black striping, so that is why I think mine are something else.

Ray that is one purty grandbaby! And smiling at that age even!
BTW, Marianna's Peace is one of my favorite tomatoes of all time. Just the right amount of meat and juice. And one slice covers the bread. It just don't get much better than that

Ray
Could be a Pink Boar.
Here is the description
Pink Boar: Looks like a port wine colored Green Zebra. Striking looks, outrageous flavor that is sweet, rich and juicy.
Early to mid-season. 70-80 days. indet. regular leaf. 2-4 oz. with good to great production. Aggressive grower. Port wine color with metalic silver green stripes. Dark colored flesh is juicy and very good rich and sweet flavor.
