Tomato disease books, need help for a xmas present
Hello all,
I'm looking for any recommendations on tomato culture books, one that mostly deals with tomato diseases (ie: photos of the disease, description, and how to treat it). The best I found was this: A Colour Atlas of Tomato Diseases Observation, Identification and Control. By: Dominique Blancard ISBN: 9781874545316 Unfortunately it's out of print, hard to find, and when you find it it is $100+ for it. Any suggestions would be great! |

It's 62 pages long and many many of the disease pictures have been reproduced at many websites, TAMU comes to mind, but this book not only shows pictures but discusses much more about each disease. It has been sold by Tomato Growers Supply in Ft Myers, you can get the website by Googling if you wish, for many years, is in the 2009 catalog/website and I assume it will also be available for 2010. The price in the 2009 catalog was $30. I find it to be invaluable.

I forgot to add the following:
IDing diseases via photos can sometimes be difficult since pictures are static and diseases are progressive. Additionally, the methods of treatment are geared more to the commercial farmer in that book, so you aren't going to see mention of specific products that many here use. Once you know what the disease is then you can either Google it for alternative treatments or post here at Tville and I know that you'll receive many suggestions.

Thanks Carolyn!...but that website no longer carries the book. I'm trying to find it elsewhere and it seems to be hard to find. I'll post back if I find it.

OK...
I just contacted a local Seminis dealer in Florida, and apparently they are sending him the Tomato Disease Guide for free?? She just took down the address and I asked about the $30 cost and she said not to worry about it...?? ::shrug:: |

Two suggestions: Contact Linda at TGS and see if she has any leftover copies. Contact Seminis directly, crawl and weep and yowl and beg!

I have the book Carolyn is speaking of. Good stuff! But I got mine from TGS and have not seen it offered anywhere else. Sorry. I can only second her recommendation.

Another good book that I like is the 3 book set "The Garden Doctor" by Mittleider.
It's more about nutrition issues with pics about all kinds of symptoms that are nutrition related. I was able to get book 1 and book 3 quite cheap off Amazon or Half.com. Book 2 was harder to get for some reason but I had it on my "wish list" and eventually got it too for less than $10. Amazon has a few listed right now, tho higher than I got them for. http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_ss?ur...eider&x=8&y=20 You can get them from the Mittleider site but they are pricey that way. But then again most all books that are mainly ALL high quality pics are rather pricey. Carol |
