NuMex Conquistador
Have any of you tried this one? Supposedly just like the other NuMex reds, but very low heat. But, would you folks say the flavor is sweet and pronounced enough to make a good chili. I was thinking of getting some seed to grow a couple of plants, but, with limited space now, I would welcome your experience and comments.

We grew this one last year. The seeds came from Seeds of Change. Germination was 100%. Conquistador was the most prolific pepper I have grown. It came on early and lasted until frost and it was loaded the whole time. We wanted an anaheim type and this was the first and only anaheim I have grown. It was used mostly as a stuffing pepper. It was fairly mild but I would not consider it sweet. The flavor was excellent when stuffed with cream cheese, rolled in egg wash and baked. Other soft cheese as a stuffing worked well.
This year (just sowed seed today) I am trying an anaheim called big chili, seeds from TGS. NuMex Conquistador is the baseline and I recommend it.

Thanks Paul!
I did check out the Chili Pepper Institute online. Both the Conquistador and the Garnet look great, but there is a 15.00 minimum order+shipping and they send far more seeds than I need. Can't blame them for wanting to stay in business. maybe some kind soul out there will have a few seeds of each. If not, life happens and you move on. |

Conquistador did not do well for me, but I've found that to be true of most NuMex pepper varieties. There is some pathogen in my soil that just eats them alive. I don't know what it is about Nu Mex peppers, because i grow other annuums just fine, but they never do well for me. Too bad, they look like some nice peppers.
