Default Black Bear

This is a variety from Russia and seed from Reinhard Kraft. Found these three hiding in the middle of the plant. Initial taste was on the tart side and will wait till other fruits mature that received more sun than these three for the final taste evaluation. Ami

After the deer pic, I thought you were going to post a bear eating your tomatoes.
It does look good.

Ami,
I am growing these this year as well, from Manfred Hahm. I have not gotten a great deal of fruit, but it is a good tasting black for us here. Sweet, and mild. kd

kd3, thanks for the input as the three listers in the SSE yearbook gave it high marks for flavor also. Since this has not been the best year for weather growing wise I can't complain. This plant I'm growing under my balcony along with three others. Ami

Ami,
We are having a fabulous tomato & pepper year here, we have never had such a great harvest. I have photographed Black Bear and will post my photos, but it looks quite the same as your photos. My gardening notes state "Large mahoganey beefsteak, 3.5" across, oblate, green shoulders, good flavour low productitivity for its size" kd

This is really a beautiful tomato. Harvested some more a few days ago and taste did improve considerably from the first one's I harvested. Ami

Very Nice! The green shoulders look great. Sliced view speaks for itself.
I'll have to get seed for that one.

Thanks,

Buck

Looking good Ami,

I love the contrast of the mahogany colour to the green shoulders. And they look quite meaty and probably would be great for sauces. How does it taste?

Ami,

I searched Russian sites for a 'Black Bear' (="черный медведь") tomato, and did not find any. Is it possible to contact Reinhard Kraft to find out more about this tomato origin?

I have seen Black Bear tomato offered by Amishland Seeds and Trade Winds Fruit vendors since at least 2009. Some SSE members who list this tomato got it from Reinhard Kraft. So it would be great to learn more about the history!

Those really look nice.
You definitely have a green thumb when it comes to growing maters.

Tomatoaddict, all you got to do is ask.

Tania, I'll send Reinhard an e-mail and ask the question.

Zana, taste is very good to excellent.

Ami

Here is Reinhard Kraft's response to my e-mail concerning the origin of Black Bear. Ami

Hi Theodor,

this tomato variety I have received from Belarus. It had a racially discriminatory name. Since I liked the variety, I renamed it to Black Bear.
"Mein Tomatenbau 2010" will be released in November, as the harvest is not yet complete.

Greetings,
Reinhard

Ami,

This is very interesting! Hmmm.... the only russian tomato I know of with a racially discriminatory name was 'Negrityonok' (and the only reason the name sounded discriminatory to English speakers is because it was incorrectly translated into English - there is nothing discriminatory or derogatory in the original Russian name). Having said that, Negrityonok is a small (2-5 oz) black tomato, so it does not quite fit.

I am hoping Andrey will chime in here - as Mr. Kraft mentioned Belarus I wonder if the seeds came from Andrey.

Tania
