Wow, great list. Wow, you got a Douglah on there. Yikes! I also started some of the Bishops Hat based on your recommendation. Looking forward to trying them.

If I grew that many peppers I wouldn't have any room for tomatoes so I'm only growing about 10 different varieties of sweet and hot peppers. Socrates will get several spots because it only takes a few plants of it to give us plenty of bell peppers for the year. I still like to grow some others just because I am paranoid about trusting just one variety to provide me with what I consider a necessity in the garden.

b54red - may I ask the source of your Socrates pepper seed? I have seen it mentioned several times, always with good comments regarding production and taste. Have not been able to find seed up here or my usual U.S.A. sources.

Not sure where b54red got it but this is the only place I've noticed it.
http://www.tomatogrowers.com/LQpeppers.htm Looks like a really big bell pepper. PS, just noticed I pasted in the large quantities page, there is another page for smaller lots. Walter |

I've bought all of my Socrates seed from Tomato Growers Supply and they have performed fantastic every year so far. I always grow several other bells but usually they disappoint in one way or another.
There is one other bell that I really love and it is a grow out from a hybrid called Early Thickset. It makes a medium to small bell pepper that is the sweetest I have ever tasted and it has very thick walls and is quite a producer as well. I also grow yellow or gold bell peppers for the look they give in salads but I have yet to find a gold with the sweetness of a good red bell pepper. |
