jiffy tomato and veg plant mix?
Noticed this at Lowe's and was thinking of using to pot up tomatoes when I found the price was 1.73 for 1.5 cu ft. I bought 2 bags, but am not sure if it will be a good mix. on the bag it says "Natural and Organic" and greenhouse quality mix, but is that really enough? I also found that it is made of 60-70% peat moss, composted bark, and perlite, along with wetting agent. Is this a great deal, or a painful lesson waiting to happen?

I have some I bought last year. Works fine as a seed starting mix, I started my onion seedlings in it last month. I know the bag says that it is supposed to be used to pot up your seedlings after you started them in Jiffy Seed Starting Mix but it looks just like seed starting mix to me.
Did you say $1.73 for 1.5cu ft.? If that's right, it's a super deal. |

Yes, 1.73. There was no price anywhere around it and they had to carry a bag in to check the price. I had to ask "one dollar and 73 cents?"

That's a real steal. The 10qt bag I bought last year was probably twice that price.
Did the bag have the "OMRI Listed" seal on it? If not it was likely last years stock, I noticed the new Jiffy Organic mixes out now carry the OMRI seal. |

I use the Seed Starting Jiffy Mix. It is around $3.49 for a 10 qt. bag. The ingredients are: 48 - 52% sphagnum peat moss, 48 - 52% vermiculite and lime for pH balance, and organic wetting agent.

Sounds like a very good mix at a GREAT price... maybe you should buy them out before they change their minds!

I checked Lowe's website before, they showed very little jiffy product, In the local store they have a large temporary display with the jiffy starting stuff, Jiffypots 3" 22 pack, Jiffypots 5" 8 pack Jiffy organic starting mix 16 qt, the jiffy strips, and the mini greenhouses. No sign at all of anything larger. Mostly they have miracle grow products, some Sta-green, Kellogg, Gardners, Premier, and 1 type of Supersoil.
