I have had a few leaf splits but no browning so maybe yours is different. Mine went away with new leaves, it was early right after planting outside.

I looked at the disease and pest locators on the TAMU site and one other but nothing matched exactly. Unfortunately you may need to wait and see how it progresses, or you can try to treat, but sometimes the affliction is not treatable, only preventable using sealing-type coatings like kaolin.
Sorry couldn't be more helpful. Maybe others have seen this. |

My guess is some combination of bug munching and possible phosphorous deficiency.
P deficiency could be causing the darkening stems. Are they more purple or more brown? How cold has it been at night lately, particularly last night? I know P deficiency in leaves can be caused by cold, and is fairly harmless and will go away when it warms up. Otherwise I'd have to agree with others that say to wait and see what happens. You could put on some mild insecticide soap if you are concerned about bug damage. |

Hi.
BlackestKrim has a good question -- is the darkening more of a purple color or a brown color? Purple would suggest a phosphorous deficiency due to either cold weather (probably not an issue in your area) or the need for some fertilizer. If the darkening is more of a brown color, let us know if the problem has progressed. |
