sourcing items for earthtainer in Ontario, Canada

Hi, I am wondering if anyone can help me. I am trying to find all of the ingredients for the earthtainer but am having trouble...

I have found the rugged totes at Lowes.

I am unable to find the pea fencing, is there something that I can use as a substitute? the containers will sit against a deck with a railing which is about 6 feet high.

I can not find the bark fines or the sunshine mix but have found pro-mix and perlite.

If anyone has any tips on finding these items I would be so grateful!

Kate,

You can use Pro-Mix BX and it will work very well. Try to find some pine Microbark at a garden center to mix in with the Perlite in my 3:2:1 Combo Mix ratio. I have to believe this is available in Canada. As a substitute, Clay Soil Conditioner might work too.

Hi, I am in the West but and had to search for Sunshine mix. I found it at Home Depot. $27 for a huge bale about 4 cubic feet I think #4 mix.

Here is a retail locator for Sunshine products.
Home Hardware and Home Depot are listed -- probably should call to verify that they have the exact Sunshine product you are looking for.

For mulch, I have had good luck buying it from Landscape Supply companies. Here in the West, I use Burnco.

Not sure about the pea fencing. I struggled enough last season trying to find sturdy 'traditional' tomato cages.

Veseys have all kinds of cages and pea fencing, they ship all over Canada.

A "generic" substitute for the Gurney's pea fence will work just fine. The key measurement is to find ones with 14 inch wide panels at the hinges. In total, you want a pea fence with 6 panels, to form the 14 inch by 28 inch rectangular unit.
