Default Miracle-Gro potting soil became very expensive

I went to HD to buy miracle grow potting soil for my tomato plants we grow in large pots. Boy was I shocked. For a mediam size bag, I spent nearly ten dollars. This is much more than they charged last Spring. Is it possible to mix this with light top soil or with dehydrated manure soils? I need to grow my tomatoes this year withoug "breaking the bank."

Default Miracle Grow

They didn't have a sale at your home depot's last week. A 2.5 cubic bag
for 10.97. You can add some peat moss to it. The dehydrated manure
stuff you can also add, but don't put too much of that.

Home depot also has mushroom compost, you can mix that in also. It
use to be 2.99, now I think they sell it for 4.99. I always check the sale
adds in the newspaper for home depot and lowe's.

I don't know. A lot of websites claim so, but I have yet to see proof.

This article associates the two but only because of Roundup.

Miracle Grow is owned by Scotts now.

I don't THINK Scotts is owned by anyone above them, but it's been a few years since Hubby retired from the fertilizer biz so I can't say for sure.

The consumer Roundup is most likely a license arraignment.

why do you feel that we should not use too much of the dydrated manure in humus? I wonder how much manure is actually in it.

You would be able to buy perlite at any hydroponic supply store.

Default miracle grow & monsanto

With nearly $3 billion in worldwide sales and more than 6,000 associates, The Scotts Miracle-Gro Company, through its wholly-owned subsidiary, The Scotts Company LLC, is the world's largest marketer of branded consumer products for lawn and garden care, with products for professional horticulture as well. The Company’s brands are the most recognized in the industry. In the U.S., the Company's Scotts®, Miracle-Gro®, Ortho® and Smith & Hawken® brands are market-leading in their categories, as is the consumer Roundup® brand, which is marketed in North America and most of Europe exclusively by Scotts and owned by Monsanto. In the U.S. the Company operates Scotts LawnService®, the second largest residential lawn care service business. In Europe, the Company’s brands include Weedol®, Pathclear®, Evergreen®, Levington®, Miracle-Gro®, KB®, Fertiligene® and Substral®.

definitely affiliated with monsanto. i wouldn't touch it with a ten foot pole.

In my area I never see 2.5 cu. ft. bags of potting soil, only 2.0 cu. ft. Last week got Miracle gro for 6.99 and today Schultz plus with moisture whatever for 6.77. I have had excellent results with Schultz. Are they owned by Monsanto?

From this statement it does not sound like Monsanto owns Scotts but that Scotts purchased the marketing rights to a portion of Monsanto's products. A deeper dig may find that one big organization is just switching around assets. Who owns whom may not be important, but who is in bed with whom may be.

Scotts agrees to buy part of Monsanto unit in a $300 million deal

Article Abstract:

Scotts Co. expects to increase its annual sales by more than 20% and its access to European markets with an agreement to buy Monsanto Co.'s Solaris division's lawn and garden products business. Scott also intends to buy marketing rights for US and European markets of Monsanto's residential-use Roundup herbicide. Solaris, which has annual revenues of over $200 million with its Ortho brand of pesticides, Weed-B-Gon and Rose Pride, has manufacturing facilities in Fort Madison, WI and Corwen, England. Monsanto, which has recently been acquired by American Homes Products Corp., will continue to produce the compounds for Roundup and sell it to agricultural markets.
