Help identifying this condition
These are pics of two of four plants I gave to a friend to give to a neighbor. None of my own (53) plants shows symptoms of this kind, and i've never seen it. I was hoping someone might be able to tell us what is going on and how to deal with it. (The images seem pretty small; not sure how to enlarge them. The problem on these two plants is a weird upward-thrusting deformed growth on sickly plants.) Thanks. Gary

If the same plants you're growing at home don't show these symptoms then it's something that's occurring where your friend is growing them. And my best guess looking at the pictures is herbicide damage. So ask your friend if any Roundup or any other herbicide has been used by that person or if he or she knows of anyone nearby who has used it recently. There 's another explanation that's more remote that has to do with the type of possible mulch being used used, if it is being used. but herbicide damage would be the most common explanation IMO. From the pictures I can't tell if it's glyphospate or 2-4-D damage/ Lastly. if it is herbicide damage then all the plants your friend is growing would be affected to one degree or another/ Is that true or is the person just growing the plants you donated? The fact that you're posting tells me that MN hasn't turned off the power in the state yet, and I know this is no laughing matter at all for those of you who live there/ Enough said.

Thanks, Carolyn, for staying on to respond.
My first thought was herbicide damage as well, but I was puzzled since only two of the four plants I gave him are showing the problem. I'll forward this to him and see if I can get more information. MN still has power, for the moment. Gary |

And why do I know this personally? B/c one summer I had a huge Master Gardener group coming to my tomato field for a look see and they could take home fruits from all the plants that did NOT have RED tags on them, that was a joke. but I waited for an AM with hardly no breeze and went out there with Roundup to get rid of the weeds. And there was vaiable damage to plants, that was very evident, even though I held the wand as closely as I could near the base of the weeds. And so, we live and learn. And now to get ready to see/hear the Fireworks that the Fire Dept sponsors at about 9 PM tonight, but here at home, and b'c I'm up higher off the village and valley floor and can actually see some of the show. Pardon my age but I do NOT want to hear the music the disc jockey of the day plays and after last year and loads of complaints from folks in the village I hope it won't happen again.
