Hanging Basket Mators
OK I live in the DFW area north of Dallas about 60 miles in Sherman TX. Summers are brutal hot and dry. What is a good hanging basket cherry type tomato variety for this area? It has to like it hot in full sun. It is for the Grand Children to raise and take care of. So it does not need to be the best tasting mator, just survive and produce with neglect and heat. Something the GC will take pride in and eat.
My initial thought is a vine type because it will be hanging around 8-feet above their little heads, that I can reach.. So if they jump up and rip off a branch vine no harm done. THX Dereck Last edited by dereckbc; March 21, 2012 at 05:10 PM. |

I doubt that any tomato in a hanging basket in your climate will survive on neglect. It will need to be watered very often. (But I hope I'm wrong, because it sounds like fun for the kids!)

I don't know about the area, but the very best hanging basket type I have found without doubt is Whippersnapper.

I like Whippersnapper very much, too. It's in my garden every year, because it's that early and prolific and I like the taste. Other good ones for hanging baskets - I always have 13 baskets - are Pendulina Orange, Himbeerrose, Resista Ampel, Tumbling Tom Yellow and Red. This year I'm going to try some new hanging basket varieties, several from Russia/Ukraine. The only bad thing is that I have to water them twice if it's really hot. clara
