Lovely! How does Beauty Lottringa taste? I love the ribbing, just gorgeous. If it tastes even remotely decent, I'll have to track it down.

Supergirl--the flavor on BL is ok--not my fav but it works good in soups. I've had two so far and the first was a little hollow (which I thought would be good if you were planning to stuff it) but then the second one was really, really meaty and worked out great for the soup it went into. Made the soup sooo tasty. But flavor is so subjective so the only thing I can say is--it's not bland or mealy and does taste tomatoey so it's a definite try it and see because it's such a beauty. And when I let it sit on the counter for a few days, the whole tomato turned a beautiful pink.
I'll post more pics soon--I've had more tomatoes ripen but just haven't had time to take pics. Cheers, Annie |

Beautiful, Annie!
Which ones are your favorites for flavor, and why? I hope you can give me some pointers for growing my plants when you visit here! |

Hi Honu,
Just one more week and I'm in Honolulu. Gotta make plans to visit with you. Nate and I are thinking Friday would work just which Friday...I'll let you know after I talk to him tonight. As for flavor--hmm...it's really hard. I don't have one that shouts to me. I have SEVERAL! So far, the ones I've liked a lot this season are Paul Robeson (could be that it was my first large ripe), Kosovo (very nice balance of flavors with a strong tomato presence), and Big Rainbow (mild but not flavorless, with a nice sweet touch and very meaty). New Big Dwarf is really good too but I haven't had a full one (all the ones I've picked have had BER) so I'm waiting to judge based on one that is completely whole. Here is a plate with Kosovo and Big Rainbow sliced up: And here's my first 1884 (I had to pick it a little early bc it was right at the bottom and touching the ground and I didn't want the ants to get to it). As you can see, it's almost 9oz: Cheers, Annie |

Wow, gorgeous colors! Thanks for the flavor descriptions!
Same here w/ New Big Dwarf - all BER so far, but there's a couple that finally look ok, and will hopefully ripen up in a few weeks. Looking forward to your visit! |

More pics of my tomatoes:
Here's my giant Kosovo: Sliced up: Recent harvest after coming back from Hawaii (vacation, so many tomatoes were overripe--thankfully, neighbours helped themselves and I also gave a HUGE bag away on my return). So far, I'm not too impressed with Green Giant (maybe too high expectations?): Guess which tomato is which (21 varieties on the table)--Kosovo, Green Giant, Berkeley Tie Dye, Black Cherry, Dr. Carolyn, Jaune Flamme, Big Rainbow, Hess, OR 117, Paul Robeson, Indian Stripe, Ananas Noire, Beauty Lottringa, Hugh's, Black, Green, Red Zebra, Julia Child, Brandywine OTV, Pale Perfect Purple, New Big Dwarf. Another pic: Hugh's: OR 117: Caprese Salad (without basil--forgot to add): Cheers, Annie |
