Purple Jalapenos

Well I was at the garden center, and happened to see these (Oh Cool! They're PURPLE!!!) Yes, I bought a couple.

Anyone ever grown these? And, are they purple all the way through, or just the skin?

I was wondering what color hot pepper jelly they might make - I always use red serranos.

There may be more than one variety, but I did not care for the ones I grew last year, at all. They were thin walled and slightly bitter. For ornamental, they are fine, but not for eating. On mine, I think only the skin was purple.

I thought of that after I bought them (hoping for purple jelly) - oops, I bet the inside is green. Oh well, we'll see I guess.

Not purple jelly. But they should still ripen to red if you leave them on the plant long enough. At the red stage they will be a lot hotter too.

My Husband grew the large purple from Baker Creek. I used them with my Purple tomatillos to make "salsa Violetta" which, if you did not cook it much (hot water bath was 5 min-pints, I think at my 4000 foot elevation in Wyoming year before last.) stayed purple and was really lovely. Husband also says the plants do not get real big.

Hmm, I'm going to have to look and see exactly what variety I have.
I have plenty of other jalapenos that will turn red, but I just love the color purple, couldn't resist.
For the hot pepper jelly (one of my favorite things), I like the serranos. But maybe I'll try a jalapeno batch too, just for comparison.
